Turner, Villanueva Reach Double Figures at Drew

MADISON, N.J. - Host Drew University used a big third quarter to pull away from Goucher College for an 86-58 Landmark Conference women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at Baldwin Gymnasium.
- Goucher (1-16, 1-9 Landmark) led 9-3 three minutes into the game following a conventional three-point play by Merci Turner.
- The Rangers (6-11, 4-6) used a 13-3 run to go up 16-12 with 2:35 left in the opening frame.
- A Zion McCoy basket and a Briyah Haggins three put the Gophers on top 17-16 with 1:15 to go.
- Drew led 18-17 after 10 minutes.
- Turner put Goucher back in front in the opening seconds of the second.
- Drew led by five twice before a Julia Cavoli three pulled the guests within two, 32-30, at the 3:39 mark.
- The Rangers used a 12-0 run to build a 44-30 lead and went into intermission up 44-32.
- The hosts started the second half with 13 straight points to go up 57-32 three minutes into the second half.
- A Darby Sherman three ended the Goucher drought.
- The Rangers used a 28-11 third to go up 72-43 with 10 minutes to play.
- Drew took its largest lead, 76-43, with 8:41 to go.
- The Rangers maintained at least a 26-point cushion the rest of the way.
- Turner reached double figures for the third straight game and 11th time this season with 18 points. She narrowly missed a double-double, registering nine rebounds.
- Maiya Villanueva added 10 points as the second Gopher in double figures. She also finished with at least 10 points for the third straight game.
- Haggins totaled seven points and five rebounds, while Cavoli and Savannah Holmes added six points apiece.
- Goucher shot 34% overall, was 5-18 behind the arc and 15-23 at the free throw line.
- The Rangers shot 37.6% overall, 6-30 from long range and 16-20 at the stripe.
- Drew outrebounded the Gophers 60-36 and held a 13-4 lead in second chance points and a 44-18 lead in points in the paint.
- Goucher travels to Moravian Wednesday night for a 7 pm Landmark Conference contest.
- The Gophers play at home for the first time in over two weeks next Saturday, hosting nationally-ranked Scranton in a 4 pm tilt at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
