WASHINGTON, DC — Goucher squandered a two-goal lead
with just over two minutes remaining today as Catholic rallied to
defeat the Gophers, 11-10.
Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County)
of the Gophers scored three goals and was awarded a pair of assists
in the first half, which ended with Goucher (3-5, 1-2 Capital
Athletic Conference) leading 7-5. The advantage grew to three goals
5:32 into the second half on a goal by Sandy Okun
(Stevenson, MD/McDonogh School) that was assisted by
Blatter.
The Cardinals (6-3, 2-2 Capital Athletic Conference) managed to
catch Goucher on an unassisted goal by Kate Bitonti with 9:15 left
to play that created an 8-8 tie, but the Gophers regained the lead
less than a minute later on Blatter's fourth goal of the
contest.
Blatter collected her fourth assist on a goal by Marlo
Tersigni (Leominster, MA/Lawrence Academy) that put the
Gophers ahead 10-8 with 4:39 remaining.
Catholic struck for two goals just :07 apart to pull even at 10-10
with 2:02 left to play, setting the stage for Kate Robinson's
game-winning goal with :07 showing on the clock.
The Cardinals finished with a commanding 44-21 edge in shots,
forcing senior goalkeeper Janna Kaufman (Atlanta,
GA/Walton) of the Gophers to make a career-high 20
saves.
