TOWSON, Md. – On a day when it recognized its three seniors – Bri Hite (Port Republic, Md), Sahsa Jimenez (Wellington, FL), and Sarah Kast (Fresno, CA) - the Goucher College Women's Soccer team (5-8-2, Landmark 0-6-0) lost by a final score of 6-0 to the Scranton Royals (11-2-2, Landmark 6-0-0) Saturday afternoon on Beldon Field in a Landmark Conference match.
Goucher knew they had their work cut out for them with the first-place Royals coming to Beldon Field. The Gophers started five first-year players but held their own for the first 45 minutes of the game. Both teams had an opportunity early on in the game but it was Scranton who struck first at 9:43 when Brittany Uricchio headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from Taylor Stevens.
Goucher's best chances came from sophomore Isabel Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who headed the ball wide on two separate occasions. The Royals scored again at 32:56 with another goal and assist from Uricchio and Stevens in a quick give and go play in front of the Gopher goal to put the Royals up 2-0 at the half. Shots in the first half had Scranton with a 4-2 advantage.
The second half saw the Gopher defense wear down as Scranton's attack was unrelenting. Scranton outshot the Gophers 7-0 in the half and had 10 corners. Over the course of the second half, the Royals scored four more times against the Gophers with each goal coming from different scorers.
The Gophers travel down Charles Street to play another Baltimore institution when they visit Notre Dame of Maryland University on Tuesday, October 24th at 4:00 pm.
