Abaza Makes 10 Saves, Gophers Blanked in Landmark Opener

TOWSON, Md. - Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Abaza (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) made 10 saves as the Goucher College women's soccer team fell 3-0 to visiting Elizabethtown at Beldon Field in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
- Abaza was forced to make her first save for Goucher (3-4, 0-1 Landmark) just over three minutes into the game.
- Caroline Altman (Las Vegas, Nev./Adelson Educational Campus) put the first Gopher shot on frame in the 17th minute but her attempt was saved by Elizabethtown (3-4-1, 1-0) keeper Trinity Soto.
- Etown took a 1-0 lead at the 18:54 mark on a goal by Ava Whisten.
- The Blue Jays made it 2-0 in the 37th minute on a Sydney Reich tally.
- Altman put another shot on goal just past the 63-minute mark that was again turned aside by Soto.
- Abaza recorded back-to-back saves on shots by Whisten just over a minute and a half apart.
- Carsen Delmont (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) got a head on a ball off a left-to-right corner kick with just over 15 minutes to play but Soto knocked down her shot attempt.
- In the 77th minute, Abaza stopped an initial shot by Bailey Groff but Groff collected the rebound and fired it home to give the guests a 3-0 advantage.
- With just under a minute left Claudia Roller (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) got a shot past Etown reserve keeper Rena Rankin who was out of position but the Blue Jay defender knocked down the attempt.
- Elizabethtown outshot Goucher 22-6 including 13-5 in shots on goal.
- Altman and Delmont each had a pair of shots for the Gophers.
- Abaza's 10 saves were a season high. She registered nine saves in each of her first two collegiate appearances.
- Goucher is back in action on Tuesday, September 28, as the Gophers host Neumann in a non-conference matchup at Beldon Field.
