Stevens, Blitz Notch First Goals, Gophers Blank Gettysburg in Opener

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 2-0 shutout over Centennial Conference foe Gettysburg College Thursday night at Beldon Field.
- Two early shots by Gettysburg's (0-1) Molly O'Shea and Jane Daiutolo went wide.
- Goucher's (1-0) junior keeper Marissa Spacht (Marlton, Pa./Garden Spot) made the first save of the game off a header by Jordan Weinberg at the 15:44 mark in the first half.
- The Gophers got their first shot of the game on a shot by Taylor Urie (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley) which was saved by Bullet keeper Sammy Grayson in the 18th minute.
- Gettysburg had four shots in the final 7:31 of the first half, two of which were turned aside by Spacht.
- Gettysburg had three shots in the first five minutes and another in the 59th minute that was saved by Spacht.
- Just past the 60-minute mark, Carly Stevens (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) fired a rocket that got past Grayson for her first career goal and gave Goucher a 1-0 lead.
- Following a Bullet yellow card in the 74th minute, Urie sent a shot wide off the free kick.
- A quick flurry of shots from Gettysburg by Daiutolo and O'Shea stressed the Gopher backline but Spacht stays strong in goal with a save on Daiutolo's shot.
- In the 84th minute senior Daniella Blitz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) knocked home a service by Taty Jimenez (Modesto, Calif./Enochs) for Blitz's first career tally, giving the Gophers a 2-0 lead.
- Spacht turned aside all six shots she faced en route to her first career shutout in her first collegiate appearance in goal.
- Grayson made one save as Gettysburg outshot Goucher 21-6.
- Urie led Goucher with a pair of shots.
- The Gophers and Bullets were meeting for the first time in women's soccer.
- Goucher improved to 5-1-2 in its last eight season openers.
- The Gophers are back in action Saturday morning, hosting Eastern at 11 am at Beldon Field.
