WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Goucher College women's soccer team (1-14 overall; 0-6 conference) traveled to face the Wilkes University Colonels (5-5-5 overall; 1-2-3 conference). Despite a strong defensive effort for the Gophers, Wilkes' balanced offensive attack led them to a 6-0 win.
The Colonels came out firing, recording their first shot 21 seconds into the contest. After a series of early attempts, Wilkes broke through at the 2:43 mark to open the scoring. The hosts continue to press, adding two more goals within the first 16 minutes of play. Despite the 3-0 deficit, the Gophers offense sprung to action with Madison Ybarra and Katelyn Conrad forcing back-to-back saves for the Wilkes goalkeeper, while Abby Lee closed out the half with a shot on goal.
The second half followed a similar pattern, as Wilkes struck again in the 58th minute to extend the lead. The Colonels added two more goals within a three-minute span later in the half to seal the result. Lee recorded two more shots in the final minutes of the second half, but none were able to break past the Colonels defense.
The Colonels outshot the Gophers (38-6) and held the edge in corners (15-0). Nia George recorded 90 minutes in net, with eight saves. Lee led the Gophers with three shot attempts, two of those being on goal.
The Gophers are back in action on Tuesday, October 21st at Moravian set to kick off at 7pm. The team returns home to celebrate senior day on Saturday, October 25th at 1pm.
