Gophers Resume Season, Suffer 9-0 Loss to Knights

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher resumed its season today by bowing to Southern Virginia, 9-0.
The Gophers (2-3), in action for the first time since they wrapped up the fall portion of their 2010-11 schedule with a 9-0 victory over McDaniel back on Oct. 8, were able to win two sets during singles play. After dropping the first set at No. 1 singles, Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) took the second set from Rachel Reid only to have Reid pull out a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3) win.
Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit), who was off to a 6-1 start in singles play this season, won the first set of her match against Bethany Johnson at No. 3 only to suffer a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 1-0 (8-6) setback.
Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) also dropped just her second singles match of the season today as she was beaten by Jaclyn Arrington 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.
The Knights (7-0) became the first team this season to take all three doubles matches from the Gophers. At No. 1, Reid and Johnson were 8-4 winners over Pulupa and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill).
