Gophers Bow to Royals, Suffer First Landmark Setback

SCRANTON, Pa. — Having already clinched the No. 1 seed in next week's Landmark Conference postseason tournament, Goucher was able to sit a couple of players who are dinged up in today's match against Scranton, the final one of the regular season for both teams.
The revamped line-up head coach Sally Baum put out there still produced a pair of wins in singles play and another during the doubles competition, but the Royals came away with a 6-3 triumph.
The only point the Gophers (11-4, 5-1 Landmark) were able to earn in doubles came at No. 1 where Ariel Lin (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) improved to 12-3 in 2012-13 with an 8-6 win over Stephanie Boccuzzi and Nicole Mahaffey.
Lin also was victorious in singles play as she defeated Boccuzzi 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1.
Lee, however, wasn't able to complete her match at No. 2 singles against Devon Cohen. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, she retired after falling behind 4-1 in the second set.
Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) dropped the first set of her match against Scranton's Megan Azzalina at No. 3, but rallied to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 and pick up her team-leading 15th singles victory of the season.
With the loss, the Gophers finished in a tie with Catholic for first place in the final Landmark standings, but because of their head-to-head win over the Cardinals, they are the No. 1 seed. The Royals (7-7, 4-2 Landmark) are the No. 3 seed.
