WESTMINSTER, Md. — Goucher managed to come up with enough wins in the four singles matches that were completed before darkness halted play today to earn a 6-1 victory over McDaniel.
Having already swept the three doubles matches, head coach Sally Baum's Gophers (3-0) needed to prevail in only two singles matches, but went one better than that as Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples), Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) and Alice Goldstein-Plesser (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts) were all triumphant.
Walsh improved to 2-0 at No. 1 and 5-3 overall in singles play this season by knocking off McDaniel's Maddy Simmons 6-4, 6-4. Ruff, playing at No. 3, posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Winsome Schauer, and Goldstein-Plesser was victorious over Laura Pollard 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
The Green Terror (2-2) picked up their only point of the match at second singles. The fifth and sixth singles matches went unfinished.
The first of the three doubles matches to be completed was the clash between Ruff and Claire Donnelly (Frederick, Md./Frederick) for the visiting Gophers and Pollard and Schauer for the home team. Ruff and Donnelly prevailed 8-5.
At No. 1 doubles, Walsh and Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) teamed up for an 8-6 win over the McDaniel pairing of Maddy and Tori Simmons; at No. 3, Goldstein-Plesser and Leigh Oehrig (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) recorded an 8-4 victory over Danielle Cloney and Dana Waskiewicz.
The Gophers have only one match remaining during the fall portion of their 2014-15 schedule and it will be at home against York on Saturday, Oct. 11, beginning at 1 p.m.
