Goucher Women's Volleyball Tames Bears In Four Sets
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) registered her second double-double of the season to help Goucher College take the final three sets to earn a 3-1 win against Ursinus College in non-conference women's volleyball action on Saturday.
Melchor registered 14 digs and matched a season-high with 11 kills for her second double-double of the season and the third time she has turned the trick in her career.
For the second-straight match, freshman Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) paced the team in kills with 14 and posted 29 kills in the two contests against Centennial Conference schools. The freshman has posted at least 10 kills four times this season.
Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) narrowly missed a double-double after tallying 24 assists and nine digs while Cat Hartley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) had a team-high 24 digs. Vendela Lundgren (Columbia, Md./Howard) added 19 assists and Virginia Estes (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) had 12 digs in the winning effort.
In the first set with the Bears holding a 13-12 lead, Ursinus went on a 7-2 run to extend its lead to 20-14 en route to taking the first set 25-20.
Goucher scored 11 of the final 13 points in the second set to rally for a 25-20 win to even the match at one set apiece. Melchor had three kills and Hartley added two service aces in an 8-0 run for the Gophers for a 22-18 edge. After two Bears points, Emily Sorrells (Annapolis, Md./South River) had a kill and two attack errors gave the visitors the set.
With the score tied at 18, the Gophers closed the third set on a 7-1 run to secure a two sets to one lead thanks to a 25-19 third set win. Chapman powered the run with four kills.
Goucher then won the fourth set 25-18 to secure the match.
The Gophers return to action on Tuesday at home against Cairn. Match time is 6 p.m.
