Goucher Women's Volleyball Surrenders Match To Gwynedd Mercy
GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Gwynedd Mercy University defeated Goucher College 3-1 in non-conference women's volleyball action on Friday night. The Gophers will have a quick turnaround, hosting NJCU and Delaware Valley University in a tri-match on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) registered her fourth double-double of the season with 15 digs and 12 assists. The sophomore now has 20 double-doubles in her career.
Emily Sorrells (Annapolis, Md./South River) paced the team with 12 kills while Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) added 11 kills. Cat Hartley fueled the squad with 29 digs while Virginia Estes (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) added 19 digs and Vendela Lundgren (Columbia, Md./Howard) had a team-high 14 assists.
Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) (15 digs, nine kills) and Linnea Prudell (York, Pa./Central York) (13 assists, nine digs) both narrowly missed double-doubles on the evening.
Gwynedd Mercy won the first eight points of the first set, and despite an 8-2 run by the Gophers to cut the margin to two points, closed the set on an 8-1 spurt to take the first set 25-15. During the Goucher run, Melchor had three kills and Sorrells added two kills.
Fueled by three Sorrells' kills, Goucher jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the second set. Melchor and Nicole Blount (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette County) powered an 8-3 run to close out a second-set 25-18 win.
Eden Adcock (Straford, N.J./Sterling Regional) helped the Gophers erase a two-point deficit and take a two-point edge (15-13) with a 5-1 run thanks to a pair of Adcock kills. The Knights then closed the set on a 12-6 run to take a two sets to one lead in the match with the 25-21 set win.
With the Gwynedd Mercy holding a 6-5 lead, Goucher went on a 10-4 run to grab a 15-10 lead thanks to three Bianca Brown (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township) kills and two by Chapman. The Knights then locked up the match with a 15-7 run to close the match including a 6-3 run when the score was tied at 19.
The loss snapped the squad's second three-game winning streak this season.
The Gophers return to Decker Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday where they are 4-1 this season. Goucher opens the day against NJCU at 11 a.m. and then after Jersey City's team and Delaware Valley battle at 1 p.m. the Gophers and the Aggies will wrap up the tri-match at 3 p.m.
