Goucher Women's Volleyball Falls At Catholic
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Goucher College fell in straight sets to the Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference women's volleyball action on Wednesday.
Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) paced the Gophers with a double-double after finishing with 12 digs and 10 kills. It is the sophomore's third double-double of the season and fourth of her career.
Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) led the team with 12 kills while Bianca Brown (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township) also reached double figures in kills with 10. Chapman reached double digits in kills for the seventh time this season and leads the team with 162 kills while Brown tallied 10 kills for the fourth time this season and the seventh time in her career.
Cat Hartley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) had a team-high 16 digs while Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) posted 19 assists and Vendela Lundgren (Columbia, Md./Howard) registered 18 assists. Hartley has recorded double figures in digs 14 times this season and 32 times in her career. DeJaeger has registered double figures in assists 13 times in 2019 and 41 times in her career while Lundgren has 10 matches with at least 10 assists.
In the first set with the score tied at 19, the Cardinals scored six of the final seven points to take the set 25-20.
The Gophers used a 9-4 run with the score tied at 8 to grab a 17-12 lead. Emily Sorrells (Annapolis, Md./South River), who had eight kills on the night, had three kills in this stretch while Chapman added two kills. Catholic came back to even the set at 19, but Goucher regained the lead at 21-10, 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22 after a Chapman kill. The Cardinals then won the final three points to take a two set lead after a 26-24 win.
Goucher held the lead for most of the third set, but with the score tied at 22 Catholic ended the match by scoring three of the final four points on the night.
The Gophers return to action at Eastern Mennonite University on Friday. Match time is 7 p.m.
