Chapman Helps Spike Or Treat Be A Treat With 11 Kills In Goucher Women's Volleyball Straight-Set Win Against Gallaudet
BALTIMORE, Md. – It was a Halloween theme Spike or Treat promotion and Goucher College did not disappoint with 38 kills led by 11 kills by freshman Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) in a straight sets win against Gallaudet University in non-conference women's volleyball action on Wednesday. Every time the Gophers had a kill on the night candy was thrown into the crowd.
Chapman, who leads the team with 188 kills and will go into her final weekend needing 12 kills to reach 200 on the year, reached double figures in kills for the ninth time this season.
Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) added eight kills and 13 digs while Virginia Estes (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) posted a team-high 18 digs and Cat Hartley added 12 digs. Vendela Lundgren (Columbia, Md./Howard) paced the team with 19 assists and Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien MacMahon) recorded 14 assists in the winning effort.
Goucher jumped out to a 9-3 lead thanks to three Chapman kills and maintain the margin at 17-11. Gallaudet closed the margin to 22-20 and 24-22, but Melchor had the kill to help the Gophers earn the first set, 25-22.
The second set looked like the Bison were going to square up the match at one set apiece after taking a 23-20 lead. Goucher then won the final five points to take a two sets lead after a 25-23 win. Chapman and Lundgren each had a kill in the decisive run.
The Bison took an early 8-4 lead before the Gophers closed the set and the match with a 21-9 run to earn a 25-17 win. Emily Sorrells (Annapolis, Md./South River), who had seven kills in the match, tallied five of those kills in the third set.
Along with throwing candy into the crowd during each kill, Goucher had a Halloween Costume contest between sets two and three with almost 10 participants.
The Baltimore team is 9-3 at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center this season and is still in playoff contention in the Landmark Conference, but the squad needs to win both games this weekend to have a shot at postseason play.
Goucher wraps up the regular season at home with a tri-meet with Elizabethtown College and the University of Scranton. The Gophers will play the Blue Jays at 12 p.m. and the Royals at 5 p.m. Prior to the game against Scranton, the team will honor senior Estes.
