Gophers Fall at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Host Stevenson University eased past Goucher College for a 3-0 non-conference women's volleyball victory on the first day of the SU Quad-Match Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 25-15.
- Goucher (1-3) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, including two kills by Kailee Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville).
- Stevenson (5-0) scored the next five points to go up 6-4 before a 4-1 Gopher run capped by a Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) kill put the guests up 8-7.
- After the Mustangs scored the next four points to go up 11-8, Goucher tied the match three more times and took a 15-14 lead on a Riley Kocell (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson) service ace.
- Following a timeout, the hosts closed on an 11-0 run to take down the first set.
- Stevenson jumped out to a 7-1 lead.
- The Gophers trailed 22-11 before pulling within seven, 24-17, on an Eden Adcock (Stratford, N.J./Sterling Regional) kill and a Mustang attack error.
- A Stevenson kill closed out the set.
- The Mustangs scored the first four points of the set before an Elizabeth Bobo (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) kill.
- Up 7-4, Stevenson scored the next five points to take an eight-point lead.
- After back-to-back kills by Kerragyn Heacock (Marysville, Wash. / Marysville Getchell) and Lucy Hendricks (Fort Bragg, Calif./Fort Bragg) made it 23-15, the hosts scored the final two points to close out the match.
- Turner and Heacock paced the Gophers with eight kills apiece.
- Turner added nine assists, while Kocell had a team-high 17.
- Chapman contributed five kills.
- Nicole Kovach (New York, N.Y./Quest to Learn) racked up 21 digs, while Rianne Nickerson (Corning, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post) added seven.
- Stevenson, which has been to 10 straight NCAA tournaments, hit .302 while Goucher hit .112 on the evening.
- Goucher is back in action at Stevenson on Saturday, facing Cabrini at noon and Arcadia at 2 pm.
- The Gophers return home on Tuesday when they host Cairn in a 7 pm contest at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
