Gophers Fall to Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - Host Hood College swept a non-conference women's volleyball match from Goucher College 3-0 Thursday evening at the Volpe Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-23, 25-14, 25-20.
- Goucher (1-5) jumped out to a 6-2 lead following a Kailee Turner kill and a Hood (4-7) attack error.
- The Blazers used a 5-1 run to take an 11-9 lead.
- Trailing 15-11, three straight Gopher points capped by a Turner kill made it 15-14.
- The team's traded the next eight points before a Nicole Kovach service ace tied the set 19-19.
- Goucher led 23-22 after an Amel Lightfoot service ace, but the Blazers scored the final three points to take a 1-0 lead.
- After a Turner kill cut the Hood lead to 8-5 early, five straight Blazer points allowed the hosts to build a 13-5 lead.
- The Hood run was halted by a Turner kill but the hosts had the next three points to open a 16-6 advantage.
- Hood opened a 9-4 lead in the third set.
- Goucher pulled within three, 11-8 on an ace by Madison Amaya.
- The Blazers led 21-11 before the Gophers used a 7-2 run to halve the Hood lead, 23-18.
- Down 24-18, the Gophers staved off two match points before a Goucher attack error ended the contest.
- Turner racked up 15 kills on .212 hitting, her second straight double-digit kill performance. She also added seven digs.
- Imani Ward added five kills for the Gophers.
- Amaya registered a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs.
- Emma Taylor and Kovach each added six digs.
- Goucher hit .205 in the opening set and .095 for the match, while the Blazers hit .279 for the match.
- Goucher travels to Rowan for a tri-match with the host Profs and Eastern on Saturday, September 16.
- The Gophers open their home schedule on Friday, September 22, entertaining Alvernia in a 6 pm match at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
