TOWSON, Md. – Junior Cary Hundley (Ellicott City, Md.) of equestrian and senior Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan) of men’s tennis have been named the Goucher College Athletes of the Week following key performances last week.
Hundley is being recognized after finishing ninth overall in the High Point Rider standings in the National Division at the American National Riding Commission (ANRC) National Equitation Championships. The junior rider posted a score of 72.33 points, which was under eight points short of the top rider during the event.
Overall, the Gophers finished in second place as the 2017 ANRC National Reserve Champions – the best finish in program history. Goucher improved on its seventh place finish during the 2016 season where they scored 142.14 points. During the 2017 event, the Gophers racked up 150.57 points.
Hundley and the Goucher equestrian team have a week off before they travel to Lexington, Ky. for the 2017 IHSA National Horse Show.
Fujitani is being honored after setting a new Goucher College record in career singles wins. He notched his 62nd win in a 6-1, 6-0 performance over Elizabethtown’s Nick Strobel. Fujitani surpassed 2016 teammate Seth Hoesman less than 365 days after Hoesman broke 2001 graduate, Tim Hannigan’s record of 59 singles wins.
Fujitani went 3-0 overall and 2-0 in singles play last week, dropping only one game in singles play. He paired up with teammate Jack Hodges (London, England) to earn the duo’s 35th win together – also a Goucher College school record.
The Goucher College men’s tennis team is set to take on Juniata College on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The last matchup between the two squads was in the 2016 Landmark Conference Championships where the Gophers took home their first-ever title, 5-2, securing their way to the 2016 NCAA tournament.
