TOWSON, Md. — Men’s swimmer Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends), who set two new school records and won three individual races, and equestrian rider Sarah Lummis (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), who picked up a Tournament of Champions series blue ribbon and earned 15 points for Goucher during three TOC shows, have been chosen as the December/January Gophers of the Month.
Selections for the award were made by the school’s sports information staff. Due to the limited number of events over winter break, achievements from both December and January were taken into account during the nomination process.
Davis began December at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. The senior team captain was already the school record holder in the 50-yard freestyle going into the two-day meet, and he swam faster than his previous best time of 21.63 on two occasions over that weekend. It was his performance in the 200 free relay, where he clocked in at 21.57, which currently stands as the top program standard at that distance.
Davis also established a new school record in the 100 free at the same meet, touching in at 47.55 to place third in a field of 51 swimmers. Returning to dual meet action in January, he swept the 50 and 100 fly against Marywood on Jan. 17. He then added another victory in the 100 free during a tri-meet on Jan. 31 which included seven-time Landmark champions Merchant Marine. Goucher defeated Drew during that meet to seal its best season performance in dual meets since 1993-94.
“Sam has really been committed to his training and his team this season,” head coach Thomas Till said. “His commitment in the offseason has paid off, and we are really excited about his goal of qualifying for the NCAA championship meet at next week’s conference meet.”
The equestrian team competed in three Tournament of Champions shows over the last two months, and Lummis picked up points in advanced walk-trot canter on all three of those occasions. Seven of her 15 points earned came after a first place result at the Holiday TOC in Coolville, Ohio, on Dec. 6. She then added a pair of third place showings during back-to-back Winter Classic TOC shows on Jan. 24 and Jan. 31. The Gophers totaled 26 points in the last of those shows, helping the team clinch third place in the highly-competitive national tournament, the top result in program history.
“We are so lucky to have Sarah on our team,” head coach Jen Bunty said. “She has amazing feel and is a very smart rider. She is an important anchor on our team, and often has to handle a great deal of pressure. She consistently performs, and continues to show improvement every week.”
Equestrian rider Alison Radgowski (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and men’s basketball guard Kevin Miles (District Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) were also considered for this month’s award.
