TOWSON, Md. – Head men's tennis coach, Brendan Kincaid, has been named the head coach of the 2016-17 All-Goucher Team for the second consecutive year following another successful season for the program.
Kincaid wrapped up his fifth season at the helm of the Goucher men's tennis team in 2017, earning the team's second consecutive Landmark Conference title and berth the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship. The Gophers traveled to Johns Hopkins to take on John Carroll University in the NCAA First Round, falling to the Blue Streak, 5-1.
Over the course of the 2016-17 season, the team went 15-11 and 5-2 in conference play. The Gopher's played a strong out of conference schedule, squaring off with four regionally ranked teams (#18 Salisbury, #15 Virginia Wesleyan, #20 Washington (Md.) and #17 John Carroll) and three nationally ranked teams (#37 Colby, #39 TCNJ, #10 Harford CC). Goucher's only losses in conference came to Juniata (5-4) and Scranton (6-3) during the regular season. However, the Gophers rebounded during the Landmark Conference Championships to complete the revenge tour over the top-seeded teams, securing their second consecutive conference title.
Under the lead of Coach Kincaid, five Gophers were recognized with Landmark Conference honors. Most notably, freshman Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic) was named the Co-Rookie of the Year – the second Goucher player to earn the honor under Kincaid. Additionally, senior Midori Fujitani was named the Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's tennis, marking the second consecutive year Goucher has touted the honor (Seth Hoesman '16).
The Gophers also attacked the record book during the 2016-17 season. Fujitani and junior Jack Hodges set a new school record in team doubles wins (39) following three years of competition together. Fujitani also went on to break the school record in singles wins (64), falling only one win short of the Landmark Conference singles record.
During his career at Goucher, Kincaid has posted a 62-48 (.564) overall record, including a 28-15 record in conference play. Since the 2014-15 season, Goucher is 25-4 against conference opponents and has been a part of the conference championship match all three years.
Goucher, which lost two seniors following the 2016-17 season, including Fujitani and Chad Resnik, looks to win its third consecutive Landmark Conference title in 2018.
The All-Goucher Team is selected by a panel of athletic administrators and represents the 10 most distinguished student-athletes and most outstanding coach during an academic year. The All-Goucher team was established in 2010-11 and is selected annually.
From June 2nd, 2017 until June 16th, 2017 Goucher will unveil one new member of the 2016-17 All-Goucher Team every weekday at 2:30 p.m. For a complete list of last year's 2015-16 All-Goucher Team, click here.
