Fujitani Honored on All-Goucher Second Team

TOWSON, Md. – Senior Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan) has been named to the 2016-17 All-Goucher Second Team following a record-breaking season as a member of the men's tennis team.

Fujitani touted a 15-5 record in singles play and 11-10 record in doubles. His 15 wins in singles play were second-highest on the team behind only freshman Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va.) with 17 singles wins. While playing primarily at the #6 position, Fujitani went 6-1 in conference matches, moving up to #5 and #4 against Catholic and Moravian, respectively, to take home wins.
Throughout his entire career at Goucher, Fujitani accumulated 64 singles wins – the most in men's tennis history, surpassing Seth Hoesman '16 (61) on April 9^th against Drew. The senior from Tokyo, Japan put an exclamation point on his record, sealing the match 5-4 on a 6-4, 6-0 win over Drew's Bryce Weizer. The win earned Goucher the #3 seed in the Landmark Conference championship later that year.

While participating in doubles play, Fujitani paired up with junior Jack Hodges (London, England). The duo played primarily at #2 doubles and posted a 4-2 record in conference play. Their overall record during the 2016-17 season was 11-8 and earned them a spot in the record book. On March 26^th, the team won 8-6 over Chris Salisbury and Jake Sandler of #20 regionally ranked, Washington College (Md.) and sealed their fate as the winningest duo in Goucher history. Prior to that match, Seth Hoesman '16 and Joey Caracappa held the record with 31 team doubles wins. Fujitani and Hodges completed their run with 39 wins as a pair.

Following his record-breaking season, Fujitani was recognized by the Landmark Conference as an All-Landmark Second Team Doubles honoree and the men's tennis Senior Scholar Athlete – an award that is given out to one student-athlete in the conference that has a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 and celebrates their athletic success.

During his time at Goucher, Fujitani was a member of a team that attended three Landmark Conference Championship title matches, winning back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017. He was part of two NCAA Men's Tennis Championships and advanced to the second round in 2016 following a 5-2 win over Yeshiva College – the first NCAA tournament win in Goucher men's tennis history.

He was recognized as an All-Landmark Conference Doubles honoree three times, including First Team honors in 2016. He was also named to All-Landmark Conference Second Team Singles following the 2016 season where he boasted a 19-2 overall record and 8-0 record in conference play.

The All-Goucher Team is selected by a panel of athletic administrators and represents the 10 most distinguished student-athletes and most outstanding coach during an academic year. The All-Goucher team was established in 2010-11 and is selected annually.
