Equestrian Earns Five IHSA Zone Championship Bids at Regionals
BURTONSVILLE, Md. - The Goucher College equestrian team had four riders earn a total of five bids to the IHSA Zone IV Championships on April 1 as it competed at the Region I Championships at Springhill Stables on Saturday. Goucher is serving as host of zones this year.
Riders must finish in the top two of their respective class to qualify for the Zone championship. The top two riders in each class at Zones will qualify for IHSA nationals.
Cole Jackson (Denver, Colo./East) earned the Zone IV, Region I championship in both Open Flat and Open Fences on Saturday. In addition to competing in two classes at the Zone championship, he will also represent Region I in the Cacchione Cup competition for the second straight season.
Makaylin Shoop (Davidsonville, Md./South River) earned the Zone IV, Region I championship in Limit Flat. She will be seeking her second straight bid to nationals, as she qualified in Limit Fences last season.
Elsa Sellmeyer (Silver Spring, Md.) was named Reserve Region champion in Limit Flat. Lexi Mason (Lothian, Md./Southern) captured the Region title in Novice Flat.
Sarah Schultheis (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) took fourth in Limit Fences and sixth in Limit Flat. Juliette Colas (Paris, France / Ecole Planchat) finished fourth in Limit Flat.
In addition to the individuals who qualified for Zones, Goucher will have one rider competing in each class in the team competition as the Gophers attempt to qualify for nationals as a team.
