Gophers Slow High-Scoring Eastern Mennonite, Fall 1-0

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College field hockey team held visiting Eastern Mennonite nearly four goals below its season average, but a late third quarter tally lifted the Royals to a 1-0 win over the Gophers at Beldon Field Wednesday evening.
- Eastern Mennonite (6-2) had all three shots in the first quarter, but all three were turned aside by Goucher (0-7) goalie Devin Brashear (Escondido, Calif. / San Pasqual).
- The Royals also had a penalty corner in the period.
- EMU generated a penalty corner with just over 10 minutes remaining before halftime but did not get a shot off.
- Just before halftime, Goucher's Mia Wiggins (San Diego, Calif. / University City) put a shot on goal that was turned aside by Royal goalie Ann Ghally.
- The Gophers generated a penalty corner just under 30 seconds into the third.
- Brashear made three saves with just over five minutes to go in the frame.
- Eastern Mennonite broke through 1:16 before the end of the third as Morgan Leslie scored on an assist by Skylar Hedgepeth.
- The Royals had two more shots in the period.
- Goucher generated two corners in the 52nd and 54th minutes.
- Marcianna Tavani (Wilmington, Del. / Ridley) had the final shot of the game in the 54th minute that was saved by Ghally.
- Eastern Mennonite had a 10-2 shot advantage in the contest and a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners.
- The Royals entered the game averaging 4.7 goals per contest and were coming off a 10-0 win over Southern Virginia on Saturday.
- Brashear made seven saves for Goucher, while Ghally turned aside both shots she faced.
- EMU won its fourth straight.
- Goucher continues its three-game homestand on Saturday, hosting Moravian in a 1 pm Landmark Conference game at Beldon Field.
