FREDERICKSBURG, VA — An opponent scored 100 points
in a win over Goucher for the first time since the 1995-96 season
today when Mary Washington posted a 100-59 Capital Athletic
Conference victory over the Gophers.
Four of Mary Washington's five starters and two reserves tallied
at least 10 points in the win as the Eagles (15-7, 9-5 CAC) shot
over 55 percent from the field. Kiernan Whitworth, A.J. Fitzgerald
and Mike Lee shared scoring honors for the home team with 14 points
apiece. Justin Baker achieved a triple-double of 13 points, 11
rebounds and 10 assists.
Pierre Jones (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College)
was 12-for-16 from the field on the way to a 26-point performance
for Goucher (7-16, 4-11 CAC).
The Eagles collected two-thirds of their points on three-point
baskets as they were 22-for-40 from long range. Whitworth,
Fitzgerald, Lee and Matt Hale all nailed four three-pinters apiece,
and a total of 10 Mary Washington players connected at least one
time from behind the three-point stripe.
Nine of the Eagles' first 11 field goals in the contest were
three-pointers as they bolted out to a 32-13 lead with 8:45
remaining before halftime. The Gophers trailed by 23 at the break
and an 11-1 run to open the second half allowed Mary Washington to
expand its advantage to 67-34.
The Gophers defeated Cabrini, 105-104, in triple overtime in
2004-05, but the last time they surrendered 100 points or more and
lost the game was to Salisbury, 121-102, on Feb. 17, 1996.
