FREDERICK, MD — Goucher was knocked out of the
Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament in the
quarterfinals for only the fifth time in the school's 16-year
affiliation with the league when the Gophers bowed to top-seeded
Hood, 82-72, tonight.
After spotting the Blazers an early 8-0 lead, the Gophers (7-18)
spent the entire first half trying to catch up. By halftime, they
had knocked their deficit down to two points, 32-30.
Goucher went ahead for the first time on a lay-up by Pierre
Jones (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College) less than two
minutes into the second half that made the score 37-36. But after a
basket by Cameron Brown (Baltimore, MD/Owings
Mills) extended the lead to three points, Hood responded
with 13 unanswered points to open up a double-digit advantage with
11:35 left to play.
Jones and James Russo (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney)
combined for 42 points in the contest and both accomplished
double-doubles: Jones grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with his 22
points and Russo, who kept the Gophers in the game with 14
first-half points, finished with 20 points and 10 boards.
Goucher had a third double-figure scorer in Miguel Negron
(Bel Air, MD/Bel Air), who tallied 10 points.
Hood advanced to the CAC semifinals despite shooting just 22-for-65
from the field (.338). The leading scorer for the Blazers was Ryan
Junghans with 22 points.
