TOWSON, MD — When Pierre Jones (Baltimore,
MD/Calvert Hall College) converted the free throw to
complete a three-point play with 3:05 remaining, Goucher was locked
in a 71-71 tie with Hood. The Gophers' next four possessions,
however, produced only one point, opening the door for the Blazers,
who entered the contest in first place in the Capital Athletic
Conference, to pull out a 78-74 victory.
The 71-71 tie held up until Jesse Gutekunst rebounded a teammate's
missed shot and scored with 1:51 left to play. When Hood's
subsequent possession resulted in a lay-up by Gutekunst, the
Blazers (17-6, 10-4 CAC) suddenly had a four-point lead.
The Gophers (7-15, 4-10) concluded a dismal 17-of-32 performance at
the free-throw line by missing three attempts from the charity
stripe in the final minute of play. A lay-up by Miguel
Negron (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) reduced Hood's lead to 77-74
with :05 showing on the clock, but a free throw by Darnell Edmonds
with :02 remaining iced the win for the Blazers, who are now 3-0
all-time when playing Goucher.
The two teams were never separated by more than six points in the
first half, which ended with the Gophers on top, 35-33.
Goucher opened up a 58-49 advantage midway through the second half
when James Russo (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) landed
his sixth three-point basket of the contest. Russo finished with 29
points.
Hood didn't wrestle the lead away from the Gophers in the second
half until Tim Abercrombie's three-point play with 4:41 left to
play made the score 68-66.
Hood's Ryan Junghans was the game's leading scorer, doing most of
his damage from the free-throw line where he was 15-of-16, tying
the Sports & Recreation Center record for most made free throws
in a game by an individual. He contributed 31 points to the win.
Gutekunst added 19 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Jones tallied 21 points for Goucher as he and Russo combined for 50
or more points in a game for the third time in 2006-07.
