HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Goucher couldn't continue shooting as well in the second half as it did during the first 20 minutes of the contest and wound up suffering a 72-62 loss to Juniata in Landmark Conference action today.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half, which ended with the Eagles (14-8, 7-4 Landmark) ahead by a point, 30-29. The Gophers were 11-for-19 (.579) in the opening period, including 4-for-5 from three-point range.
Juniata went ahead to stay on a basket by Brian Cannon with 15:12 left to play that snapped a 38-38 tie and ignited a run of eight unanswered points. The Gophers (6-15, 4-7 Landmark) went 4:32 without a single point until a basket by Amir Hakim (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College) made the score 46-40 with 12:10 remaining.
The closest Goucher would get the rest of the way was five points. In the second half, head coach Leonard Trevino's squad shot .419 (13-for-31).
Five Juniata players scored in double figures: Garrett Bull, who was 7-for-8 from the field and knocked down five three-point baskets, finished with 20 points, David Thompson supplied the Eagles with 13 points, Eric Mueseler and Brian Cannon tallied 12 points apiece, and Kyle Opitz added 11 points.
Miguel Negron (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) captured scoring honors for Goucher as he made four three-point baskets to end up with 12 points. Darrin Boswell II (Philadelphia, PA/Joppatowne) chipped in with 11 points.
