Rangers Pin One-Point Setback on Gophers
Three-Pointer at :07 Wipes Out Two-Point Advantage
January 10, 2009
MADISON, N.J. – At no point during the second half of
today's Landmark Conference encounter between Goucher and Drew were
the two teams ever separated by more than two points, suggesting
that this might be the type of game in which the last team to score
would probably win.
The Gophers were hoping that Reginald Suggs (Baltimore,
Md./Walbrook) may have produced the game-winning points
when he grabbed an offensive rebound and scored in the paint to
snap a 42-42 tie with only :27 remaining. Instead, with :07 showing
on the clock, Gerard Mullin nailed a three-point attempt from the
top of the key that allowed the Rangers to emerge with a 45-44
victory.
The Gophers (2-10, 0-3 Landmark), who were 17-for-49 from the
field (.347), didn't have a single double-figure scorer.
Amir Hakim (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College)
and Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook)
both finished with nine points.
Hakim and Cotton were also Goucher's co-leaders in rebounds with
seven apiece.
Kyle Joyce supplied the Rangers (3-9, 1-2 Landmark) with 11 points
and the game-winning three-pointer bumped Mullin's total for the
game to 10 points.
Both teams led by as many as five points in the first half, which ended with the Gophers on top, 25-23. The lead changed hands no fewer than 13 times in the second half.
