Perry Tries to Rescue Gophers, Erupts for 30 Points

January 25, 2009
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – For the second time in less than 24
hours, Goucher's Micah Perry (Silver Spring,
Md./Springbrook) took the final shot of the game when the
Gophers battled Susquehanna today.
Perry made both of the shots, although the one Saturday night turned out to be a little more dramatic as it snapped a tie and provided the Gophers with a 55-53 victory over Juniata.
Today's outcome wasn't riding on Perry's final shot as the Crusaders were ahead by 12 points when he let go a three-pointer in the closing seconds. Susquehanna still wound up winning, 83-74, but by making his last field goal attempt, the sophomore guard finished with a career-high 30 points.
Perry, who has been the leading scorer for Goucher in each of the past three contests, was 10-for-17 from the field, including 7-for-10 from three-point territory. The 30 points is the most any player from a team in the Landmark Conference has scored in a game so far this season.
Although the Gophers (4-12, 2-5 Landmark) never led the entire game, they were down by only a point after Darrin Boswell (Nottingham, Md./Joppatowne) landed a three-point basket with :22 remaining in the first half. But right before the buzzer sounded ending the opening period, Matt McDevitt got a lay-up to drop, restoring Susquehanna's advantage to three points (33-30).
A 13-for-24 shooting performance (.542) allowed Susquehanna (11-6, 5-2 Landmark) to maintain its lead throughout the second half, although a pair of free throws by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) brought the Gophers to within 65-61 with 2:27 left to play. The Crusaders were then able to seal the victory by converting 14-of-17 free-throw attempts during the final 2:06.
Boswell and Cotton joined Perry as double-figure scorers for Goucher. Boswell furnished the Gophers with 13 points and Cotton with 10, all in the second half.
Spenser Spencer captured scoring honors for Susquehanna as he knocked down 24 points.
Going into the game, the all-time series between the two schools was knotted at 3-3.
