Boswell, Yambor Combine for 40 Points in 71-64 Triumph
February 14, 2009
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Darrin Boswell (Nottingham,
Md./Joppatowne), who tallied nine points during an early
run of 13 unanswered points that put Goucher ahead to stay,
finished with a game-high 23 points tonight in leading the Gophers
to a 71-64 Landmark Conference triumph over Moravian.
The Gophers spotted the Greyhounds (9-14, 4-8 Landmark) the first
four points of the contest and didn't get on the scoreboard
themselves until Boswell knocked down a three-point attempt after
3:05 had elapsed. Following a lay-up by Shane Yambor
(Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch), Boswell made his next
three field goal attemps and then Nick DeSouza (Washington,
D.C./Archbishop Spalding) capped the 13-0 run by getting a
short jumper to drop.
Shane Painter's lay-up with 10:57 remaining before halftime provided Moravian with its first points in nearly eight full minutes and the Greyhounds were able to work their way back to within 14-11 on a basket by Charlie Rigoglioso. But the Gophers (6-15, 4-8 Landmark) responded with another run – this time nine unanswered points – and expanded their lead to 23-11 on Yambor's jumper with 5:14 left in the opening period.
Goucher was still up by 12 points (32-20) when the first half came to a close.
Although the Greyhounds were 18-for-35 from the field (.514) the second half, they never got any closer than seven points. The Gophers helped their cause with a strong shooting performance of their own, going 15-for-28 (.536) over the final 20:00.
Boswell missed only three of the 13 shots he launched during the contest and was 3-for-3 on three-point attempts. This was his 15th double-figure scoring performance of the season and the fourth time he's surpassed 20 points in a game.
Yambor backed up Boswell's 23-point effort by knocking down a career-high 17 points.
The leading scorer for Moravian with 15 points was Eric Weaver.
