PRINCETON, N.J. — Goucher, which was going up against a
Division I opponent for only the fourth time since men's basketball
became an intercollegiate sport at the school, was held to an
all-time low point total this afternoon by Princeton when the
Tigers conquered head coach Leonard Trevino's Gophers, 88-35.
The 35 points are two fewer than the Gophers managed to score on
December 8, 2007 against Maryland-Baltimore County, the last
Division I opponent they faced prior to taking on the Tigers
today.
The Gophers (5-12) got on the scoreboard first today, taking a 2-0
advantage :56 into the contest on a jumper by Shane Yambor
(Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch). After a three-point
basket by Douglas Davis put the Tigers (9-5) ahead 3-2,
Micah Perry (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), who
was coming off back-to-back 20-point performances against Moravian
(Friday) and Scranton (Saturday), nailed a jumper that provided
Goucher with a 4-3 lead.
Princeton launched nine shots from behind the three-point stripe in the opening 5:37 and made five of them, including one by Marcus Schroeder at the 17:56 mark that put the Tigers ahead to stay.
During one stretch of the first half that consumed just over 10 minutes, the Tigers outscored the Gophers, 26-2. All 10 Princeton players who got into the game during the opening period scored at least two points as the Tigers were in complete command by halftime, leading 44-17.
Davis, who was an honorable mention All-Ivy League performer in 2008-09 as a freshman, was one of four Princeton players who scored in double figures as he furnished the Tigers with 22 points.
The leading scorers for Goucher were Pat Bailey (Rockville, Md./Magruder) with six points and Yambor with five.
With the loss, the Gophers are now 0-4 all-time against Division I opponents. The school record for fewest points scored in a game against a Division III opponent is 39 against Lawrence in 2005-06.
