FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Only two points separated Goucher
and Nova Southeastern following a basket by Micah Perry
(Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) of the Gophers with 1:09
left to play this afternoon. But the Sharks responded by scoring
the final eight points of the contest to pull out a 68-58 victory
over head coach Leonard Trevino's squad at the Cruzin Classic.
The Gophers (1-7), who trailed trailed by as many as 12 points in the opening 20:00 and walked off the court at the break down 31-23, came away with points on each of their first five possessions of the second half and caught their Division II opponent at 33-33 on a tip-in by Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch). After the Sharks (5-3) regained the lead on a free throw by John Brooks, Goucher went ahead for the first time since the first 5:00 of the contest on a layup by Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco).
Over the next 11:36, the Gophers stayed within five points of the lead. They fell six points back when Brooks converted two more free throws with 2:49 left to play, but got those two points back when Yambor was fouled and converted a pair of charity shots with 1:42 remaining.
A steal by Steve Musenga (Germantown, Md./Good Counsel) set up the basket by Perry that sliced Nova Southeastern's lead to 60-58 with 1:09 showing on the clock, but Alex Gynes scored in the paint with :45 left to play to restore the Sharks' lead to four points. Gynes, who finished with a team-high 14 points, added four free throws down the stretch to help finish off the Gophers.
Yambor captured scoring honors for Goucher by furnishing the Gophers with 14 points, his sixth double-digit scoring performance in eight games so far this season. The sophomore was also credited with six rebounds, four steals and an assist, and was chosen to be on the all-tournament team.
Tim Alexander (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) came off the bench to score 10 points for Goucher.
