Giacubeno Makes First Start, Supplies Gophers with 13 Points
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Goucher made only five field goals in the second half — two of which were in the final minute of play — and Susquehanna's bench delivered 38 points as the Crusaders topped the Gophers, 70-50, this evening in a Landmark Conference game.
The Gophers (2-7, 0-2 Landmark) were up 22-16 after sophomore post player Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) got a short-range jumper to fall with 7:42 remaining in the first half. The rest of the period, however, head coach Leonard Trevino's squad was just 2-for-9 from the field and committed four turnovers, allowing the Crusaders (6-7, 2-0 Landmark) to assume a 34-27 lead after 20 minutes.
A 3-point basket by freshman guard Colby Giacubeno (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), who started for the first time since transferring to Goucher in December, reduced Susquehanna's advantage to 38-32 almost four minutes into the second half. Over the next 15:16, however, the Gophers were held to 14 points, 10 of which came on free throws.
Giacubeno wound up as the leading scorer for the Gophers as he landed three 3-pointers and went 4-of-5 at the free-throw line for 13 points. Junior guard Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) added 10 points, all in the first half.
Spenser Spencer was 7-for-15 from the field, including 7-for-10 on 3-point attempts, as he came off the bench to furnish the Crusaders with 24 points. The only starter to score in double figures for Susquehanna was J.T. Wilson, who finished with 13 points.
Lindsay was credited with four blocked shots and has now rejected at least one opponent shot in eight consecutive games for the Gophers.
