Rangers Keep Gophers from Much-Needed Landmark Win
MADISON, N.J. — Goucher, which trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, seemed to be on the verge of putting Drew away this evening and picking up its first Landmark Conference win of the season when Dorian Green (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) knocked down a jumper to provide the Gophers with a 54-48 lead with 10:46 remaining.
Only Second Time in 2010-11 Opponent Shoots Over 50 Percent
MADISON, N.J. — Goucher, which trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, seemed to be on the verge of putting Drew away this evening and picking up its first Landmark Conference win of the season when Dorian Green (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) knocked down a jumper to provide the Gophers with a 54-48 lead with 10:46 remaining.
The Rangers never allowed that to happen. Instead, they required just over four minutes to turn that six-point deficit into a 60-54 advantage as they went on a 12-0 run.
A dunk by Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) and then a free throw by Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) allowed Goucher to narrow the gap to 60-57 with 5:11 left to play, but the Gophers would get no closer. In fact, Drew responded by going on a decisive run of nine unanswered points that became part of a bigger 20-8 end-of-the-game spurt that allowed the Rangers to come out on top, 80-65.
Drew (5-9, 1-3 Landmark) raced out a 15-point lead before the game was even 10 minutes old, but a 13-0 run that featured 3-point field goals by Yambor and Tim Alexander (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) had Goucher down only 21-19 with 6:44 to play before halftime. The Gophers (2-9, 0-4 Landmark) went ahead for the first time on a Yambor layup with 4:17 showing on the clock and at the end of the first half, the two teams were deadlocked at 32-32.
There were five additional ties and the neither team led by more than four points at any time in the second half until Alexander connected again on a 3-point attempt to put Goucher up 52-47 with 11:27 left to play. The rest of the way, however, the Gophers were 3-for-15 from the field.
The Rangers were only the second opponent all season to register a shooting percetage over .500 against head coach Leonard Trevino's squad. They made 29 of their 55 shots from the floor (.527).
Yambor finished as Goucher's leading scorer as he furnished the Gophers with 22 points. Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and Emmanuel Wood (Washington, D.C./C. H. Flowers) chipped in with 10 apiece.
Terrell Brown matched Yambor's 22-point performance as he was 10-for-15 from the field and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Rangers.
