KINGS POINT, N.Y. — A buzzer-beating 3-point shot from the corner by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) provided Goucher with a 59-58 Landmark Conference victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy this afternoon.
Prior to hitting the game-winning basket today, Cotton, who is averaging 6.5 points per game, had missed the other two 3-pointers he'd attempted this season.
The Gophers (3-9, 1-4 Landmark) needed the junior forward's heroics because the Mariners (7-8, 2-3 Landmark) had taken a 58-56 lead with :41 remaining on a 3-pointer by Kevin Kerr.
The Gophers, who were 15-for-27 from the field (.556) in the first half, led 35-24 after 20 minutes, but the Mariners went on a 17-7 run over the opening 9:10 of the second period and closed to within 42-41 on a layup by Tom Izzo. Over the final 7:41, the two teams were never separated by more than four points.
Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch), who put Goucher ahead 56-55 by making a pair of free throws with 2:22 remaining, led all scorers as he tallied 15 points in the Gophers' second victory over Merchant Marine since the formation of the Landmark Conference. Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) added 13 points and 11 rebounds for his team-leading third double-double of the season.
Not one Merchant Marine player was able to score in double figures. The Mariners finished with a .328 shooting percentage (19-for-58).
