TOWSON, Md. — Goucher trailed Moravian by 10 points before this evening's Landmark Conference game in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center was even three minutes old. And even though the Gophers narrowed the gap to as few as three points, the Greyhounds came away with an 80-67 victory.
A layup by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) allowed the Gophers (3-10, 1-5 Landmark) to close to within 18-15 midway through the first half, but by halftime, the Greyhounds (9-8, 3-3 Landmark) had built their advantage back up to 40-29.
After a 3-point field goal by Garrett Johnson put Moravian up 44-33 a little over two minutes into the second half, the Greyhounds were able to maintain a double-digit lead until Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) knocked down a medium-range jumper with 1:06 left to play to make the score 74-65.
Yambor finished with a team-leading 20 points and also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, giving the junior swingman his first double-double of the season.
Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) supplied the Gophers with 13 points and five rebounds. The sophomore post player also blocked four shots, the final of which allowed him to tie the single-season record of 30 blocks established by Thabo Letsebe in 2001-02.
Also scoring in double figures for the Gophers were Emmanuel Wood (Washington, D.C./C. H. Flowers) and Tim Alexander (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport), who tallied 13 and 10 points, respectively.
For Moravian, which assumed a 4-3 edge in the all-time series between the two schools, D.J. Strayhorn was the leading scorer as he contributed 22 points to the win. He was also credited with six assists and remains the only player in the Landmark Conference averaging more than 4.5 assists per game in 2010-11.
