TOWSON, Md. — Goucher didn't pick a particularly good night for its worst shooting effort of the season. The Gophers shot 22.9 percent from the field by going 16-for-70 against Scranton and suffered a 70-47 loss to the Landmark Conference-leading Royals this evening in front of a crowd of 355 in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
The Gophers (3-11, 1-6 Landmark) missed their first six shots before Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) got a short-range jumper to fall. Goucher's only other point during the first 6:27 of the contest came from a made free throw by Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco).
A conventional three-point play by Kyle Gladden (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) cut Scranton's lead to 12-10 with 12:07 remaining in the first half, but over the next 4:02, the Royals (14-2, 7-0 Landmark Conference) went on a 13-4 run to assume a 25-14 advantage. They were still up by 11 (35-24) at halftime.
Scranton's lead never dipped below seven points and ballooned to as many as 25 in the second half.
Lindsay was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Gophers as he tallied 13 points and grabbed 14 boards for his fourth double-double of the season. In addition, when he deflected a shot by Scranton's Nick Jaskula with 3:25 remaining, he broke the single-season school record of 30 blocked shots established by Thabo Letsebe in 2001-02.
Yambor added 11 points.
Zach Ashworth captured scoring honors for the Royals by knocking down 20 points.
By winning tonight, the Royals remain the only Landmark Conference opponent that head coach Leonard Trevino's squad has not defeated since the conference was formed. The all-time series now stands 7-0 in Scranton's favor.
