Third Win in Johnston Hall During Landmark's Four-Year Existence
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — In a game in which the two teams were never separated by more than eight points, Goucher came out on top of Moravian, 53-50, this afternoon, making this the third time the Gophers defeated the Greyhounds in Johnston Hall during the four-year existence of the Landmark Conference.
The Gophers (5-13, 3-8 Landmark) owned a 7-0 lead before the game was even three minutes old and their biggest advantage of the first half was 20-13, the score after a made free throw by Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) with 8:20 showing on the clock. The Greyhounds (9-13, 3-8 Landmark) answered with eight consecutive points to go ahead 21-20, but by halftime, Goucher was back in front, 26-22.
Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) scored three times in the paint during the first 2:21 of the second half and his third basket in that span put head coach Leonard Trevino's squad up 32-24. The Gophers did surrender the lead when Moravian's Chris Cullen converted a layup with 5:31 left to play to make the score 45-44, but after a free throw by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) tied it up at 45-45 just :28 later, Goucher went ahead to stay on a layup by Lindsay with 4:25 remaining.
After a layup by Dylan Chaney (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) changed the score to 53-47 with 1:01 remaining, the Greyhounds countered with a 3-point basket by Cullen :46 showing on the clock to make it a one-possession game. The Gophers then used up all but one second on the shot clock before drawing a foul only to miss both of the subsequent free-throw attempts. Moravian's D.J. Strayhorn was off the mark on a 3-point shot with :04 showing on the clock that would have tied the score had it gone in.
Linsday, who played only five minutes of the opening period due to early foul trouble, tallied 11 points in the second half to finish with a team-high 15 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds, narrowly missing his sixth double-double of the 2010-11 campaign.
Colby Giacubeno (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) contributed 14 points to the victory.
Cullen was the leading scorer for Moravian as he finished with 19 points.
Even though the Greyhounds have a 3-1 record against the Gophers in games played in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center, today's win evens the all-time series between the two schools at 4-4.
