Career-High 14 Points, Nine Rebounds for Lindsay in 57-50 Setback
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) supplied Goucher with career-high totals of 14 points and nine rebounds against Johns Hopkins today, but the sophomore post player's efforts were not enough to lead the Gophers to their first victory of the 2010-11 season.
The Blue Jays prevailed 57-50 in the consolation semifinals of the 2010 Pride of Maryland Championship, earning the right to play McDaniel for fifth place on Saturday. Goucher, meanwhile, will take on Washington (Md.) in a game to determine seventh place.
Lindsay, who also blocked three shots and made a career-best five steals, didn't score his first point of today's game until he converted a layup with 6:22 remaining in the first half, but it put the Gophers (0-2) ahead 15-14. Still, Goucher needed to score the final four points of the period to trail by only seven (28-21) at the break.
The Blue Jays (1-1) stretched their lead to as many as 10 points three times in the second half, the final time on a pair of free throws by Matt Kelly that made the score 46-36 with 6:49 left to play. The Gophers responded by going on a 12-4 run, closing to within 50-48 on a free throw by Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) with 1:22 remaining.
An offensive rebound by Adam Spengler prolonged Hopkins' subsequent possession, which cluminated in a pair of free throws by Mike Rhoads. After the Gophers missed a 3-point attempt, the Blue Jays tacked on two more points at the charity stripe, extending their lead to 54-48 with just :15 showing on the clock.
The Gophers attempted five 3-point shots during the final 2:46 and couldn't get one to fall, completing an 0-for-15 performance from 3-point range.
Lindsay was Goucher's only double-digit scorer. Dorian Green (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) furnished the Gophers with nine points, while Cotton and Jason Jones (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) both chipped in with eight points.
Kelly led the Blue Jays in points (12) and rebounds (8).
This was only the second meeting between Goucher and Johns Hopkins in the tournament's six-year history. In 2006, the Blue Jays knocked off the Gophers, 85-69, in the semifinals and went on to defeat Salisbury, 71-60, in the championship game.
