Gophers Celebrate First Victory of 2010-11 Season
TOWSON, Md. — Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) was Goucher's leading scorer and top rebounder as the Gophers registered their first victory of the season, a 63-54 triumph over Maryland Bible tonight in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
Yambor Collects 17 Points, Grabs Nine Rebounds in 63-54 Win
TOWSON, Md. — Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) was Goucher's leading scorer and top rebounder as the Gophers registered their first victory of the season, a 63-54 triumph over Maryland Bible tonight in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
Yambor had only two points to his credit when he was awarded an assist on the basket that put the Gophers (1-3) ahead to stay: a short-range jumper by Emmanuel Wood (Washington, D.C./C. H. Flowers) with 3:58 remaining in the first half. On Goucher's next possession, the junior guard nailed a shot from 3-point range, providing his team with a 23-19 advantage.
Another successful 3-point attempt by Yambor in the closing seconds of the first half allowed the Gophers to head to the locker room up 28-23.
Goucher's lead reached double figures for the first time when Yambor landed his third 3-pointer of the contest 4:54 into the second half. The Soldiers (1-4) fell behind by as many as 19 points before they knocked their deficit down to 57-48 with 1:22 left to play.
Yambor finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) was Goucher's only other double-digit scorer as he furnished the Gophers with 13 points and eight boards.
Maryland Bible's Mike Holden led all scorers as he posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.
With the victory, the Gophers avenged an 82-79 loss to Maryland Bible last season and assumed a 4-1 lead in the all-time series between the two in-state rivals.
