Gophers Dispose of Saints, 88-84, in Triple Overtime

Considering their recent history in games that go into overtime, the last place the Gophers probably wanted to be was locked in a 64-64 tie with the Saints at the end of regulation.
Yambor, Lindsay Combine for 17 of Goucher's 24 Points in OT
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher and Marymount were both in search of their second victories of the 2010-11 season when they met up tonight in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center. Considering their recent history in games that go into overtime, the last place the Gophers probably wanted to be was locked in a 64-64 tie with the Saints at the end of regulation.
The last seven times they've had to go overtime, the Gophers wound up losing. That included the four consecutive games in 2007-08 that required extra time to determine a winner, which remains an NCAA Division III record (shared with Dominican-Ill.). In fact, the last time head coach Leonard Trevino's squad prevailed in overtime was a thrilling 105-104 triumph over Cabrini in 2004-05 that went to three additional five-minute periods.
Nothing was settled tonight in the first OT as a layup by Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) accounted for Goucher's only points and the Saints managed only a pair of free throws.
With Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) and Tim Alexander (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) knocking down 3-point attempts on Goucher's first two possessions, the Gophers assumed a 72-66 lead in the second OT. Still, they needed a basket by Lindsay with :17 remaining to tie the score at 76-76 and force a third extra session.
Lindsay opened the scoring in the third OT and a 3-pointer by Yambor put Goucher up 81-76 after 2:15. After Keenan Brown canned a pair of free throws to pull Marymount to within 81-78, Yambor connected on another medium-range jumper to restore the Gophers' lead to five. The Saints came up empty on their next trip down the court and Steve Musenga (Germantown, Md./Good Counsel) made them pay as his conventional three-point play with :51 remaining provided Goucher with an 86-78 advantage.
Even with Stephen Simoneau making four free throws and one field goal in the closing seconds to complete a game-high 28-point performance for the Saints, the Gophers came out on top, 88-84, in three OTs.
The second triple-overtime game in the 21-year history of Goucher's men's basketball program featured nine ties and 13 lead changes during regulation. The lead changed hands another five times during OT.
The Saints (1-8) shot a blistering 72.7 percent from the field (16-for-22) in the first half, but led only 38-36 at the break. Marymount possessed a 63-58 lead with 4:16 remaining in regulation, but scored only one point the rest of the period.
Yambor and Lindsay combined to score 17 of the 24 points the Gophers (2-4) managed in the three OTs. Yambor, a junior forward, finished with a season-high 21 points and Lindsay, a sophomore post player, wound up with career-high totals 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for the first double-double in his two seasons at Goucher.
Kyle Gladden (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) also posted a double-double for the Gophers as he tallied 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
In the first start of his collegiate career, freshman guard Dylan Chaney (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) scored only two points, but handed out nine assists and committed only one turnover while playing 47 minutes.
