SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — There are possibly a few hurricanes that struck this Caribbean island that didn't do as much damage as three players in particular inflicted on Goucher today. Emmanuel Colon, Ruben Rodriguez and Juan Carl Rodriguez combined for 68 points and 28 rebounds in leading Central Bayamon past head coach Leonard Trevino's Gophers, 82-71.
The trio accounted for all but eight of the Division II team's 45 points in the first half as the Gophers (2-5) trailed by 12 points after 20 minutes. By the end of the contest, Colon had accumulated 24 points, Ruben Rodriguez had 23 points to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds and Juan Carl Rodriguez recorded a double-double of 21 points and 10 boards.
The two teams were never separated by more than four points until Ruben Rodriguez converted a pair of free throws with 5:29 remaining before halftime to put Central Bayamon up 28-22.
The Gophers managed to knock their deficit below double digits once in the second half when freshman forward Emmanuel Wood (Washington, D.C./C. H. Flowers) hit two free throws with 9:15 left to play to make the score 63-55.
Wood, who delivered 17 points off the bench, shared scoring honors for Goucher with junior guard Shane Yambor (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch).
