TOWSON, Md. — A wild first half which featured 15 lead changes gave way to an equally chaotic second half, in which the Gophers rallied behind strong defense to move to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference.
D.J. Strayhorn scored the the final 10 points of the first half for Moravian (8-3, 2-1 Landmark), helping to give the Greyhounds a 38-35 lead at intermission.
Out of the break, the Greyhounds extended the lead to nine, but after an exchange of baskets, Goucher (4-8, 2-0 Landmark) put on the defensive pressure.
The Gophers held Moravian scoreless from the field from 12:20 to 2:19, a span which included a game-tying 9-0 Goucher run.
With the score 58-57 in Moravian's favor, Brian Morton II (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) picked a fantastic time to score his only basket of the game, drawing a foul along with it to earn a three-point play.
After a tying jumper from Strayhorn, Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) took a pass from Troy Parker Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) and finished with a thunderous dunk to put the Gophers back on top.
After Lindsay blocked two shots on the defensive end, Morton hit a free throw to make the lead three, and after another defensive stop, Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md./Fairmont Heights) extended the lead to five with two free throws. He finished with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
After an acrobatic jumper pulled the Greyhounds within three with :07 left, it was up to Richard Harris (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville) to ice the game, which he did by hitting a free throw to put the game out of reach. Harris finished with 22.
This is the first time since joining the Landmark Conference that the Gophers start a season 2-0. The last time the team started 2-0 in conference play was back when the team played in the Capital Athletic Conference. In 2004-05, the Gophers started 3-0 in the CAC.
Catholic is the only other remaining undefeated team in-conference, sitting at 2-0 as well.
Strayhorn led all scorers with 24 points.
