Gophers Overcome Two Buzzer-Beaters, Scoring Drought
TOWSON, Md. — There is only one team left in the Landmark Conference without a conference loss on its record, with Goucher now sitting alone atop the standings at 3-0.
Opening with a 7-0 run, Goucher (5-8, 3-0 Landmark) received five points from Richard Harris (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville) to jump ahead early.
The Gophers looked to be heading into the half with a double-digit lead, but Luke Cable hit a long three for Susquehanna (5-9, 1-2 Landmark) as time expired to make the halftime score 33-26.
The Gophers did not make a field goal from the 12:53 mark until there was less than a minute left in the game, letting the Crusaders back into the game, eventually letting the visitors take the lead.
Brian Morton II (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) ended the Goucher drought with a straight-on three to put the Gophers up 50-49 with under :40 remaining.
Susquehanna worked the ball around, but was unable to get a shot off as Morton broke it up with a steal, forcing the visitors to foul.
The sophomore missed the first of his free throws, but was true on his second, leaving Susquehanna down two with just under :08 remaining.
Brendon Hedley took the ball himself, netting a one-handed runner from just outside the paint, hitting off glass at the horn, forcing overtime.
Dylan Chaney (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) opened up overtime scoring with a free throw, then assisted on a Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) layup, passing through traffic to the open post player.
After a put-back bucket for the visitors, Morton hit a spinning basket from eight feet, pushing the lead back up to three.
Chaney went back to the line, hitting both to make the lead five and, after another defensive stop, Harris was fouled.
Harris made both of his attempts, putting his game total to 11-for-11 from the line. He was fouled with :10 remaining with a chance to break a school record for free throw percentage. He hit the first, tying a record held by four players of 12-for-12, but the final attempt came up just short.
He led all scorers with 26 points.
A major factor in the game was the disparity in free-throw shooting as the Gophers, powered by Harris, hit 25 of 33 from the stripe. The Crusaders shot only 31.8% from the line, shooting 7-for-22.
