HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Three games into the conference season, Goucher found itself at the top of the Landmark standings. Now with three games remaining, the Gophers will need help to make the playoffs.
Goucher (5-16, 3-8 Landmark) opened well in the must-win game, holding Juniata (15-7, 7-4 Landmark) to just one made field goal over the first 8:49 of the contest.
Using that defensive effort, the Gophers raced out to an 8-4 lead early behind a pair of buckets from Dylan Chaney (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and one each from Brian Morton II (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and Manney Wood (Washington, D.C./C. H. Flowers).
But while Juniata struggled on the defensive end, the defensive effort from the Eagles kept them in the game.
After Goucher scored its eighth point, with 16:09 remaining in the first half, it wouldn't be until 8:08 later that the Gophers found the net from the field. Trae Lindsay (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) broke the drought with a layup, putting the Gophers on top 12-10 for their last lead of the game.
A three-pointer gave Juniata a 13-12 lead, but Goucher tied the score at 13-13 and then again on a Mico James (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) three-pointer to make the game 18-18.
Goucher could not capitalize, however, after the tying bucket as the team failed to score from the field again in the first half after that, going 5:34 without a basket. During that frame, the Eagles went on a 11-1 run, taking the lead for good.
Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md./Fairmont Heights) came off the bench to give the Gophers a scoring spark, hitting four three-pointers on just six attempts, all in the second half. He finished with a team-high 12 points.
The Eagles were aided by a 20-8 edge in caused turnovers.
With tonight's loss, the Gophers will need to win their remaining three games and receive help from other teams in the conference.
