Opening Split Good for Third in Tip-Off Tournament
WINCHESTER, Va. — Goucher held Patrick Henry scoreless over the first 8:58 as the team jumped out to a 22-0 lead, cruising in the BB&T Tip-Off consolation game.
The final score, 96-38, accounted for the largest margin of victory in program history. The previous record, set on Nov. 21, 1994 against Valley Forge Christian, was 56.
The team also set the record for fewest points allowed in a game, besting the 40 given up to Gallaudet on Feb. 8, 1997.
At the conclusion of the first half, Goucher (1-1) held a 48-15 edge. A three-pointer with 1:09 remaining in the half cost the Gophers a chance to match the program record for fewest allowed in a half (12), set against Moravian in 2009.
Midway through the first half, Mico James (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) earned his first career points with a steal and a thunderous dunk as part of a run in which he had seven consecutive Goucher points. He was one of seven players to finished the game with double digit points, as he totaled 11.
Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md./Fairmont Heights) had a team-high 15 points, matching game-high honors with James Nelson of Patrick Henry (0-2). For his efforts this week, Livingston, a freshman, was named to the all-tournament team.
In addition to Livingston and James, Norman Allen II (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist), Manney Wood (Washington, D.C./C. H. Flowers (Md.)), Troy DeShields (Seaford, Del./Sussex Technical), Alex Noble (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville) and Zachary Hall (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) all reached the 10-point plateau.
As a team, the Gophers made 40 of their 71 shots (54.1%).
