WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher's men's basketball program has more wins over Gallaudet in its 25-year history than any other opponent. The Gophers, however, weren't able to add to that total this afternoon.
Instead it was the Bison, who had dropped the last three games in the series between the two former members of the Capital Athletic Conference, that prevailed. They led by four points after 20 minutes and by as many as 16 in the second half before claiming a 75-71 victory.
A 3-point field goal by Kevin Miles (District Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) put Goucher up 9-8 after 2:44 of action, but that proved to be the only lead of the entire contest for the Gophers (1-8). Gallaudet went ahead to stay just 15 seconds later on a 3-point response by Ben Coleman.
The Bison (5-2) managed to extend its lead to 32-23 on a 3-point basket by Trey Gordon with just over five minutes left to play in the first half, but a 9-4 run by Goucher that started with a pair of free throws by Troy DeShields (Seaford, Del./Sussex Technical) and included another 3-point field goal by Miles had head coach Leonard Trevino's squad down only 36-32 at the break.
Once the second half got under way, it took Gallaudet less than two and a half minutes to open up an 11-point advantage as the Bison came away with points on each of their first four possessions. All four made baskets by the home team during a four-minute stretch were 3-pointers, with Gordon draining the one that put the home team up 54-40.
Gallaudet assumed its biggest lead of the game (56-40) on its next possession, which ended with Joshua McGriff converting a layup.
Goucher began to foul in an attempt to get back into the game in the final two minutes and was able to reduce an 11-point deficit down to as few as two points when Miles sank his seventh 3-pointer of the contest with just over two seconds remaining. That put the Gophers in a position where they had to foul one last time and Raymond Nelson responded by hitting two free throws with 1.5 seconds showing on the clock to wrap up the scoring.
Miles led all scorers as he was 11-for-17 from the field, including 7-for-11 on 3-point attempts, and made 4-of-5 free throws. The junior guard's career-high 33-point performance came seven days after he tallied 25 points in an overtime loss to Drew.
Chris Outing (New Windsor, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) and DeShields supplied the Gophers with 14 points apiece.
Gordon, who nailed six 3-pointers in the win, was the leading scorer and rebounder for Gallaudet as he registered a double-double of 28 points and 10 boards.
Despite the non-conference setback, Goucher still leads the all-time series with Gallaudet, 32-8.
