SELINSGROVE, Pa. — As far as losses go, tonight's certainly ranks among the worst in the 25-year history of Goucher's men's basketball program.
Only once have the Gophers surrendered more points in a game than the 122 they allowed Susquehanna to score in tonight's Landmark Conference contest. And only five times have they lost by more points than they did in bowing to the Crusaders, 122-76.
Numerous Landmark records were broken by Susquehanna, including most point (122), most field goals (45) and most 3-point field goals (22) in a game.
Susquehanna's first possession of the contest ended with a 3-point field goal by Josh Miller. The Crusaders were able to tack on two-point baskets by Steven Weidlich and Ryan Traub, as well as a free throw by Traub, to assume an 8-0 advantage before Alex Noble (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville) accounted for Goucher's first points by landing a 3-point attempt.
Ten more first-half possessions for the Crusaders (18-6, 11-4 Landmark) concluded with a made 3-pointer as they went 11-for-26 from distance, part of a 21-for-45 shooting performance (.467) in the opening 20 minutes.
Six of the 11 made 3-pointers in the first half belonged to Brandon Headley, who added two more in the second half and finished with a game-high 30 points. Jeff Dzierzawiec contributed 24 points to the victory.
Goucher's five starters, meanwhile, were limited to a combined total of 21 points. The top two scorers for the Gophers were Brian Ball (Rockville, Md./Rockville) and Kevin Miles (District Heights, Md./Gwynn Park), who came off the bench to deliver 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Ball, who also hauled in five rebounds and handed out four assists, tallied 13 of his points in the first half.
Goucher's records for most points allowed and largest margin of defeat were both set in the same game, a 134-68 loss to Marymount back in 1990-91.
The Gophers (4-20, 3-12 Landmark) will close out their 2014-15 campaign on Saturday when they travel to Kings Point, N.Y. to take on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
