SALEM, Va. — In the first 40 games of his career at Goucher, Ed Oliver (Adelphi, Md./High Point) scored as many as 10 points only one time. He also reached double figures in rebounds only once.
Today, however, in game No. 41, the senior forward notched his first double-double as a Gopher, establishing new career highs for points and rebounds with a 16-point, 13-rebound performance that powered head coach Tom Rose's squad to a convincing 94-59 triumph over Penn State-New Kensington in the consolation of the Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament.
Oliver, who was 5-for-7 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line, was also credited with two assists, a pair of steals and three blocked shots.
The leading scorer in the game was Kevin Miles (District Heights, Md./Gwynn Park), who represented Goucher on the all-tournament team. He contributed 25 points to the victory and is now averaging 22.0 points per game in 2015-16.
A run of 10 straight points by the Nittany Lions (3-4) turned a five-point deficit into a five-point lead in the first half, but the Gophers went ahead for good on a layup by Oliver that made the score 22-21 with 9:07 remaining before halftime.
The 45-28 advantage Goucher enjoyed at the break was its largest through the first 20 minutes of play.
The Nittany Lions never got closer than 14 points at any time during the second half.
The season-high 94 points the Gophers scored were evenly split between the starters and the bench. While Miles and Oliver accounted for all but six of the points that came from the starting five, Norman Allen II (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and Ibrahim Kallon (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) were the mainstays among the non-starters. Allen tallied tallied 17 points and Kallon chipped in with 16.
Shane Baronner produced 19 points to capture scoring honors for Penn State-New Kensington.
The Gophers (3-3) will play their first Landmark Conference game of the season Wednesday when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Moravian. The opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
