BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Kevin Miles (District Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) and Norman Allen II (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) tallied 17 points apiece tonight in Goucher's first Landmark Conference contest of the season, but the Gophers were tagged with an 83-74 loss by Moravian.
Before the game was even eight minutes old, head coach Tom Rose's squad was staring at a 13-point deficit. From there, even though they made only one of their next six shots from the field, the Gophers (3-4, 0-1 Landmark) went on an 8-0 run, and were trailing only 17-12 when Tre Galloway III (Fort Washington, Md./Paint Branch) converted a pair of free throws with midway through the first half.
Goucher went ahead for the first time on a basket by Allen which made the score 22-21 with 6:31 remaining in the first half, but by the break, the home team was back in front, 34-33.
Moravian's first possession of the second half ended with Sean Hanna nailing a shot from 3-point range that provided the Greyhounds (3-3, 1-0 Landmark) with a 37-33 advantage.
Beginning with a conventional three-point play by Miles at the 13:40 mark, the lead changed hands on four consecutive possessions. The free throw Miles made to complete the three-point play put Goucher ahead 48-47. Next trip down, Moravian went up 50-48 thanks to a 3-point bucket by Khalil Rhett.
Zach Hill (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) provided the Gophers with their final lead when he was fouled making a layup. The made free throw made the score 51-50, but 23 seconds later, a layup by Rhett put the Greyhounds back on top by a point.
Miles achieved his first double-double of the season as he latched onto 10 rebounds, helping Goucher win the battle of the boards, 44-38.
For Moravian, Jake McGee and Oneil Holder were a combined 15-for-23 from the field. Together they contributed 45 points, 17 rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots to the victory.
The Gophers play another Landmark Conference game away from home Saturday against Drew before they get to perform in front of the home crowd in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center for the first time in 2015-16 against Hood on Dec. 9. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
