Gophers Break Single-Game Record for Turnovers

MADISON, N.J. — Despite setting a new school record for fewest turnovers committed in a game, Goucher was held below 70 points by a Division III opponent for only the second time in 2015-16 in a 71-61 loss to Drew this afternoon.

It was the second Landmark Conference contest of the season for both teams.

The Gophers were guilty of only four turnovers the entire contest. The record for fewest turnovers had been five, established in an 80-67 triumph over Gordon back on November 15, 2003.

What did in head coach Tom Rose's squad was shooting percentage, particularly from long range. As a team, Goucher was 21-for-69 from the field (.304) and made only five of the 22 attempts it took from 3-point range (.227).

Still, an early 11-0 run allowed the Gophers (3-5, 0-2 Landmark) to open up a 13-7 lead over the Rangers. Drew, however, reeled off 10 consecutive points over a span of 3:45 later in the first half that put the home team back in front, 20-14.

It was still just a one-possession game nearing the final minute of the opening half when Goucher committed one of its turnovers. That opened the door for Drew to score the final five points of the period to assume a 37-29 advantage.

The first points of the second half were from a 3-point basket by Kevin Herring II of the Rangers. The Gophers committed what would be their final turnover on their subsequent possession, but it lead to another 3-pointer by Herring that made the score 43-29.

The closest Goucher would get the remainder of the game was seven points on four different occasions, including twice in the final 90 seconds.

Chris Outing (New Windsor, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Gophers as he finished with 12 points and seven boards. Kevin Miles (District Heights, Md./Gwynn Park), who went in averaging 21.3 points per game, was held to 11 in the loss.

For the Rangers (3-3, 2-0 Landmark), Herring knocked down 19 points, while Nate Aldrich achieved a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The ninth game will be the first home contest of the 2015-16 campaign for Goucher, which will welcome Hood to the Decker Sports & Recreation Center on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m.
