TOWSON, Md. - Visiting Washington College jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first eight minutes of action and never looked back against the Goucher College men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon, as the Shoremen upended the Gophers, 80-58, at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
With the defeat, the Gophers dropped to 0-3 overall, while Washington evened their record to 1-1 on the young year in the win.
In the contest, the game remained close in the first five minutes of action, with Washington holding a 9-6 lead over the Gophers. The Shoremen, however, went on an 8-1 run over the next few minutes to open a double-digit lead over Goucher at 17-7.
The closest Goucher came to the Washington lead the rest of the half was eight points on two separate occasions, as the Shoremen took an insurmountable 40-19 lead on Goucher with 4:13 to go in the first half. The Gophers, however, ended the half strong, as a 12-7 spurt over the final four minutes of the first half made it a 47-31 game in favor of Washington College at the break.
To start the second half, the Shoremen put the game away, as a 14-0 run to open the frame put them up for good a 61-31. From there, Washington coasted down the stretch, taking the double-digit victory over Goucher on the road.
In the defeat, sophomore Dwayne Morton (Waynesville, Mo./Waynesville) led the Gophers in the scoring column, finishing with 12 points, while dishing out a pair of assists with two steals. It marked the second time in the first three games of the regular season that Morton has both led the Gophers in scoring and hit double-digits for a game, as well.
